I didn’t start out wanting to make other shoppers at the store feel inadequate about their own shopping bags or lack there of, but it was an unfortunate and unavoidable side effect of making these shopping bags. I know everyone is looking at my bags (not the ones under my eyes) and wishing they were me. So , I thought I would bestow the gift of a how-to unto grocery shoppers everywhere and put a stop to this epidemic of grocery shopping envy and insecurity. I have to do my part to make the world a better place so I do really meaningful stuff like making shopping bag tutorials.
This all started with finding a pack of three very large canvas bags on clearance and a need to make a gift for a friend (what up, Charla?). The fact that there were three was great because I can’t give a gift to someone without giving myself one too. I got an idea of how to pretty and modern them up from a movie I had watched recently. What movie? you ask. Delicacy with Audrey Tautou. She had a great wardrobe in the movie and one sweater (see pic above) in particular made me feel how Charla and I must make all those other grocery shoppers feel. I had some speedball screen printing ink and since the design was so simple I didn’t need to make a silk screen, I could just cheat and use some masking tape and a paintbrush. I made the yellow wrap around to the other side of the bag in one continuous rectangle and the top black rectangle go up and over to the other side as well. I let it dry and that was it.
I use the bag for groceries, and for carrying anything when I want to arouse some hard core envy. So if you want to safeguard against potential feelings of inadequacy when you see Charla or me out shopping, then find yourself and your friends and loved ones a tote bag, or sew some up out of some old fabric or a drop cloth and slap some paint/ink on that bagitch. There are a couple of links to bags above if you do not want to sew. One is a souped up uber deluxe bag with pockets inside that you could get if you want your friend to get a decent gift and not just a shitty little plain bag (sorry, Charla).
Have fun and don’t hate me because my bag is beautiful!
